Why do you think The Food Basket is an important support organization for hungry on the Big Island?
There will always be hungry and less fortunate families wherever you go, and the Food Basket has played an integral role in the support for the needy. As Betty and Julien Beck said, “Hunger is not a choice, giving is. “
How have you personally supported the services of The Food Basket, why ,and will you continue?
Our repair store has been advertising free diagnostic scan valued at $98 provided that the customer make a non-perishable food donation to the Food Basket. Both Hilo and Kona Transmission Technology is offering this program. Every year our car show is geared toward helping the Food Basket. Our recent car show called Run to the Sun Poker Run and Car Show has collected almost 1000 lbs. of non-perishable food. Every one who would like display their cool rides in the show had to donate at least five lbs of non-perishable food. Spectators are encouraged to bring a can as an entry fee to enter the car show. We had over 150 entries, aprox. 2,000 specators and over 82 businesses supporting the car show!
Why do you choose to do this?
I choose to do this because we love our community and this is one way of giving back to say mahalo. I’m also, once upon a time, a participant that needed help to feed my family. It’s now time to give back. And yes, I will continue to help those who are struggling and share with those who are less fortunate in our community.
Have you ever personally had to access a service like this, or has someone you know had too…how did that feel? (do you think that has allowed you to be more compassionate to the hungry)
Yes. I know a few families that are utilizing this service right now. And it humbles me because I have been there. I’m very happy and grateful to know that there’s still organizations like the Food Basket who care about the less fortunate. It breaks my heart to see a family that’s struggling especially when they have keiki to feed.
Is there anything else you’d like to say to encourage others to consider the problem of hunger on the Big Island, and support the Food Basket?
During this hard time with the economy being down, I can only imagine there is an increased number of families needing help. I know that times are hard but I also know that there’s others out there that’s struggling more than me and we are only as strong as our community !!
Respectfully,
